Our primary hobby/business is Chester County Trees at https://ccpottedtrees.com.
At Chester County Trees, we grow and sell potted trees, shrubs, bushes, plants, and grapevines. In the beginning, we used several 50 gallon rainwater barrels and 100 gallon stock tanks to collect and store rain water to water our potted plants and fruit and vegetable gardens. After several summers of long term no rain and empty rainwater barrels and stock tanks, we decided to experiment with one 275 gallon IBC tote and we are glad we did.
Cost was never an issue because one 50 gallon rainwater barrel actually costs more than one 275 gallon IBC tote. The main issue was the size of the tote, but we got over that real fast. After we bought a second IBC tote, we sold most of our rain barrels except for a few at specific locations. Needless to say, we have plenty of water even during the dry summer periods.
Our first tote purchase was a learning experience. Tote condition and main valve thread type matters. Different totes come with different main valve thread types. You want the coarse thread type on the main valve for a tight, secure, dependable connection to fittings attached to the tote main valve such as a garden hose adapter or 3/4" ball valve faucet.
Finding a like new food grade tote in our area was not an easy task. We searched locally only to be disappointed with the advertised food grade totes we inspected, no food grade validating labels or dates, not so clean or well maintained or wrong main valve thread, and dented or damaged cages. Eventually, we found a company near philadelphia that offered like new, one time used, food grade totes on a regular basis with the coarse main valve thread.
Due to our amazement of how a tote was so beneficial over using rain barrels, we thought it might be a good idea to stock and sell like new, one time used, food grade totes to homeowners and companies located in our area. Our first load of totes sold out almost immediately. Because of the interest of food grade totes in our area, we will continue to stock and sell food grade totes for a few more years or more as long as they are readily available.
After trial and error of experimenting with various tote fittings, attachments, and accessories, we now use, stock, and sell (or recommend) the best tote coarse fittings, attachments and accessories for your convenience.
We water our potted plants and gardens with rain barrels and totes, so we know what works best and what does not work! We mainly use totes since they capture and store a lot more rainwater than barrels. We use 3/4" high flow ball valve faucets for maximum water flow to save time, we cover our totes with a uv protector to prevent algae build up and prolong the life of the plastic bottle, and we use tote and barrel water filters to collect the cleanest rain water possible.
One of our totes water source is from spouting on a 36' x 12' shed that collects an enormous amount of water every time it rains. We use a garden hose water overflow fitting on this tote to drain the excess rain water. Another one of our totes water source is a nearby well pipe where fresh ground water is pumped using a small water transfer pump to fill the tote and that water source is endless.
