We water our gardens with rain barrels and totes, so we know what works and what doesn't work! We mainly use totes since they capture and store a lot more rainwater than barrels, we use high flow valves for maximum water flow to save time, we cover our totes with a uv protector to prevent algae build up and prolong the life of the plastic bottle, and we use tote and barrel water filters to collect the cleanest rain water possible.

We started collecting rainwater with several 50 gallon rainwater barrels. One rainwater barrel actually costs a lot more than one 275 gallon IBC tote, the barrels only provide about 45 gallons of water, run out of water quickly, and their cheap faucet trickles water way too slow for comfort. Then, we purchased a few older very used totes where the factory main shut-off valves leaked, the plastic bottles seemed brittle, and the cages were rusted or dented which prompted us to consider a like new tote for a few dollars more and long term gain.

What we are learning is that it is becoming more difficult to find like new clean totes with the standard coarse threads on the main valve for a reasonable price and more homeowners and companies are buying our totes than we anticipated. What does that mean? That means that we are constantly on the hunt for the best totes available and making many trips to our suppliers as new clean totes are available.
